The French Navy, after helping to unify Vietnam under the Nguyen Dynasty, had begun a heavy presence in the Mekong Delta.
In 1862, France had obtained concessions from Vietnam’s Emperor Tu Duc, ceding three treaty ports in Annam and Tonkin, and all of Cochinchina, the latter being formally declared a French territory in 1864.
