Twelve-year-old Queen Jadwiga (Hedwig), in an arranged union engineered by the Polish nobility in 1386, marries Ladislas Jogaila, the thirty-something grand duke of Lithuania, who is baptized a Latin Christian and crowned king of Poland as Wladyslaw II (or V) Jagiellio.

Poland and Lithuania are thus informally united.
