Two months after Quantrill's raid on Lawrence, he leads another slaughter at Baxter Springs, where his guerillas, wearing Federal uniforms, attack a Union headquarters train, killing ninety-eight Federals and losing only six of their own men. (It will later be reported that the raiders mutilated the dead Union soldiers and noncombatants, many of whom had been shot to death after being taken prisoner.)
