The Republican forces launch their final "pacification"…
February 1794 CE
The Republican forces launch their final "pacification" effort (named Vendée-Vengé or "Vendée Avenged") under orders from the Committee of Public Safety in February 1794: twelve columns, the colonnes infernales ("infernal columns") under Louis Marie Turreau, march through the Vendée.
General Turreau inquires about "the fate of the women and children I will encounter in rebel territory", stating that, were it "necessary to pass them all by sword", he would require a decree.
In response, the Committee of Public Safety orders him to "eliminate the brigands to the last man, there is your duty..." (Sutherland, Donald: The French Revolution and Empire: The Quest for a Civic Order p. 222, (2003) Blackwell Publishing)
