President Ellauri is forced to resign in…
1876 CE to 1887 CE
President Ellauri is forced to resign in 1875 because of serious disturbances.
His successor, Jose Pedro Varela (1875-76), curtails liberties, arrests opposition leaders and deports the most notable among them to Cuba, and successfully quells an armed rebellion.
At the beginning of 1876, Colonel Lorenzo Latorre (1876-80) assumes power; he is appointed constitutional president in 1879, but the following year he resigns, after declaring that Uruguayans are "ungovernable," and moves to Argentina.
