The most important strategic defeat of Walker comes during the Campaign of 1856–57 when the Costa Rican army, led by President Juan Rafael Mora Porras, General José Joaquín Mora Porras (the president's brother), and General José María Cañas (1809-1860), defeats the Filibusters in Rivas, Nicaragua on April 11, 1856, in the Second Battle of Rivas).

It is in this battle that the soldier and drummer Juan Santamaría sacrifices himself by setting the Filibuster stronghold on fire.

In parallel with Enmanuel Mongalo y Rubio in Nicaragua, Santamaría will become Costa Rica's national hero.

Walker deliberately contaminates the water wells of Rivas with corpses.

Later, a cholera epidemic will spread to the Costa Rican troops and the civilian population of the city of Rivas.

Within a few months nearly ten thousand civilians will have died, almost ten percent of the population of Costa Rica.
