English archaeologist Flinders Petrie, making the first of his many forays into Palestine, excavates at Tell el-Hesi, Palestine (mistakenly identified as Tel Lachish), the first scientific excavation of an archaeological site in the Holy Land, during which he discovers how tells are formed.

The site, first described in 1838 by Edward Robinson, is two hundred feet above the land in the East and sixty feet high in the other directions.

The mound is roughly square with two hundred feet on a side in Robinson's time but has been reduced by excavations and military action.
