Lee orders Ewell to move to Cashtown…
June 1863 CE
Lee orders Ewell to move to Cashtown or Gettysburg when he learns that the Union Army of the Potomac has a new commander in General Meade.
However, the commander of Meade's advance cavalry, General John Buford, recognizes the strategic importance of Gettysburg as a road center and is prepared to hold this site until reinforcements arrived.
A chance encounter on June 30, between Confederate General Ambrose P. Hill and General Buford, both in search of boots and saddles in Gettysburg, opens a great battle here, where the Union commands defensive positions.
