A new moderate Irish nationalist movement is formed in the 1870s.

As the Irish Parliamentary Party it becomes a major factor in parliament under Charles Stewart Parnell.

Home Rule Bills introduced by Liberal Prime Minister Gladstone fail of passage, and split the Liberals.

A significant unionist minority (largely based in Ulster), opposes Home Rule, fearing that a Catholic-Nationalist parliament in Dublin will discriminate against them and will also hurt its industry.
