Thomas Paine, having narrowly escaped execution while…
August 1794 CE
Thomas Paine, having narrowly escaped execution while in prison, has kept his head and survived the few vital days needed to be spared by the fall of Robespierre on 9 Thermidor (July 27, 1794).
James Monroe had resigned his Senate seat after being appointed Minister to France in 1794 and, as ambassador, secures Paine’s release on the condition that he be sent to America.
Monroe manages to free all the Americans held in French prisons, including Madame Lafayette.
He has issued American passports for the Lafayette family, (since they have been granted citizenship), before she travels to Lafayette's place of imprisonment, in Olmutz.
