About twelve hundred Confederates under Major General…
February 1865 CE
About twelve hundred Confederates under Major General Lafayette McLaws are posted at the crossing on the Salkehatchie River as Sherman's Union armies march north across South Carolina.
Union soldiers had begun to build bridges to bypass McLaws on February 2.
The next day, two brigades under Major General Francis P. Blair (Howard's army) wade through the swamp and assault the Confederates’ flank.
McLaws withdraws toward Branchville, having stalled Sherman's advance for only one day.
Sherman's forces continue moving north into North Carolina.
