The Satsuma, Chōshū, and other han leaders and radical courtiers, rebel, seize the imperial palace, and announce their own restoration on January 3, 1868.

Keiki nominally accepts the plan, retiring from the Imperial Court to Osaka at the same time as resigning as shogun.
