J. M. W. Turner, having witnessed the fire that burnt down most of the Palace of Westminster on October 16, 1834, had made a watercolor sketch at the time, and in 1835 paints The Burning of the Houses of Lords and Commons in oil on canvas.
In such works as these, made after 1828, Turner’s style can be said to have laid the foundation for Impressionism.
