The Duke of Caxias reassumes supreme command in January 1868 with the removal of Bartolomé Mitre as supreme commander and decides to bypass Curupayty and Humaitá, carried out with success by the squadron commanded by Captain Delfim Carlos de Carvalho, later Baron of Passagem.
