A twenty-five-year-old Ariel Sharon (a future Prime Minster of Israel) is given command of Unit 101, an Israeli Army anti-terrorism unit (its mission is often described as that of retaliation against Arab attacks on Jewish villages), in 1953.
Sharon had earlier joined the Haganah, protecting kibbutzim from raids by Bedouins and neighboring Arab villagers.
A leader of one of the crack units during the Israeli war of independence, he has since been involved in intelligence and reconnaissance work.
