Years: 1610 - 1610
July

Żółkiewski learns of Shuiski's relief force and divides his forces to meet Russian forces before they come to Tsaryovo and lift the siege.

He leaves at night so that Voluyev will not notice his absence.

The De la Gardie Campaign ends at the Battle of Klushino on July 4, 1610, in which Polish forces numbering about four thousand men (of which about eighty percent are the famous 'winged' hussars) under Żółkiewski defeat a numerically superior force of about thirty-five thousand to forty thousand Russians under Dmitry Shuisky, Andrew Golicyn and Danilo Mezecki, including about five thousand to ten thousand mercenary units temporarily allied to Russia, mostly Finnish and Swedish, with some regiments composed of French, German and British.

Including the forces that do not take part in combat (remaining in camp, reserved, or are delayed), the numbers are twelve thousand three hundred Poles against forty-eight thousand Russians.

The Poles are supported by two cannons, and Russians by eleven.

The main Russian army is able to retreat, as Polish forces are exhausted and more interested in looting the camp.

The Poles take great quantities of gold and silver, furs, and hundreds of wagons and carriages.

Trophies include several command flags and banners, extensive stocks of military equipment, and all eleven Russian artillery pieces.

This giant and surprising defeat of the Russian forces shocks everyone and opens a new phase in the current conflict.

Zólkiewski now turns towards the Russians at Tsarovo.
