The Terek Cossack Host is a Cossack host created in 1577 from free Cossacks who resettle from the Volga to the Terek River.
In 1792 it is included in the Caucasus Line Cossack Host and separates from it again in 1860, with the capital of Vladikavkaz.
In 1916, the population of the Host is 255,000 within an area of 1.9 million desyatinas.Many of the early members of the Terek Cossacks are Ossetians.

Cossack men, invariably fighting on horseback, wear distinctive military uniforms, with long coats, bullet pouches, and tall Caucasian hats by 1900, by which time Cossack communities enjoy a privileged tax-free status in the Russian Empire, although they have a twenty-year military service commitment (it will be reduced to eighteen years from 1909).
They are on active duty for five years, but can fulfill their remaining obligation with the reserves.
