French Polynesia, officially the Collectivity of French Polynesia, is an overseas collectivity of the French Republic and its sole overseas country.
It is composed of one hundred and eighteen geographically dispersed islands and atolls stretching over an expanse of more than two thousand kilometers (twelve hundred miles) in the South Pacific Ocean. Its total land area is 4,167 square kilomeers (1,609 square miles).
French Polynesia is divided into five groups of islands: the Society Islands archipelago, composed of the Windward Islands and the Leeward Islands; the Tuamotu Archipelago; the Gambier Islands; the Marquesas Islands; and the Austral Islands.
Among its one hundred and eighteen islands and atolls, sixty-seven are inhabited.
Tahiti, which is located within the Society Islands, is the most populous island, having close to sicty-nine percent of the population of French Polynesia as of 2017.
Papeete, located on Tahiti, is the capital.
Although not an integral part of its territory, Clipperton Island was administered from French Polynesia until 2007.
Following the Great Polynesian Migration, European explorers visited the islands of French Polynesia on several occasions.
Traders and whaling ships also visited.
n 1842, the French took over the islands and established a French protectorate they called Établissements français d'Océanie (EFO) (French Establishments/Settlements of Oceania).
In 1946, the EFO became an overseas territory under the constitution of the French Fourth Republic, and Polynesians were granted the right to vote through citizenship.
In 1957, the EFO were renamed French Polynesia.
In 1983 French Polynesia became a member of the Pacific Community, a regional development organization.
Since 28 March 2003, French Polynesia has been an overseas collectivity of the French Republic under the constitutional revision of article 74, and later gained, with law 2004-192 of 27 February 2004, an administrative autonomy, two symbolic manifestations of which are the title of the President of French Polynesia and its additional designation as an overseas country.

Geography & Environmental Context
Polynesia in this framework consists of three fixed subregions:

North Polynesia: the Hawaiian Islands except the Big Island of Hawai‘i (i.e., O‘ahu, Maui, Kaua‘i, Moloka‘i, Lāna‘i, Ni‘ihau, Kaho‘olawe) plus Midway Atoll.

West Polynesia: the Big Island of Hawai‘i, Tonga, Samoa, Tuvalu, Tokelau, the Cook Islands, and French Polynesia (Tahiti, Society Islands, Tuamotus, Marquesas).

Across these archipelagos, tropical trade-wind climates prevail, with cyclone belts affecting Samoa, the Cooks, Tuvalu, and Tokelau; volcanic high islands (Hawai‘i, Tahiti, Savai‘i, Upolu) contrast with low coral atolls (Marsh–Tuamotu chains). Reef fisheries, taro and breadfruit groves, and limited freshwater lenses defined ecological limits, while population growth and 20th-century militarization increased pressure on land and lagoons.

The late 19th century saw variable El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events that brought droughts to atolls and heavy rains to high islands. Cyclones periodically devastated coastal settlements and breadfruit groves. In the mid-20th century, runway construction, urbanization, and lagoon dredging altered local hydrology, while radioactive fallout (from French tests in French Polynesia from 1966 and upwind U.S. tests in Micronesia earlier) entered regional anxiety and health debates.

High islands maintained mixed gardens (taro, yams, bananas), breadfruit orchards, pigs, and intensive reef fishing; plantation sectors (sugar, pineapple in Hawai‘i; copra in French Polynesia, the Cooks, Tuvalu, Tokelau) linked families to cash.

Atolls relied on coconuts, preserved breadfruit, pulaka/taro pits, and lagoon fisheries, supplemented by remittances and colonial rations in bad years.

In East Polynesia, Pitcairn’s Bounty-descendant culture and Rapa Nui’s rongorongo legacy and moai landscape shaped strong place-based identities.
Environmental Adaptation & Resilience
Atoll communities relied on breadfruit fermentation pits, cisterns, and inter-island kin networks for famine relief. Reef tenure and customary closures (e.g., ra‘ui/kapu) protected fisheries. After cyclones, rebuilding mobilized church groups and village labor. Cash-crop volatility was buffered by subsistence gardens and migration remittances.

Transition
By 1971, Polynesia had moved from missionary kingdoms and colonial protectorates to a mosaic of independent states, free-association polities, colonies, and a U.S. state. War-time infrastructures, air routes, and mass tourism reoriented economies; diaspora networks tied villages to Auckland, Honolulu, Sydney, and Los Angeles. Nuclear testing in French Polynesia cast a long shadow, while cultural revivals reclaimed dance, language, and chiefly authority. Across atolls and high islands, custom and Christianity, remittances and reefs together sustained Polynesian resilience in the modern era.
Easter Island's population is reduced to the point where some of the dead are not even buried.
Tuberculosis, introduced by whalers in the mid-nineteenth century, has already killed several islanders when the first Christian missionary, Eugène Eyraud, dies from this disease in 1867.
About a quarter of the island's population succumbs along with him.
Paul Gauguin, increasingly disgusted with the rising Western influence in Tahiti again seeks a more remote environment, this time on the island of Hiva Oa in the Marquesas, where he moves in September 1901.
He purchases land here and, with the help of his neighbors, he builds a home that he calls “the house of pleasure”.
Conceived as a total work of art decorated with elaborately carved friezes, the house is possibly inspired by Maori works he had seen in Auckland, New Zealand.
Gauguin had earlier written a travelogue (first published 1901) titled Noa Noa, originally conceived as commentary on his paintings and describing his experiences in Tahiti.
Modern critics will suggest that the contents of the book were in part fantasized and plagiarized.
In it he reveals that he had in 1891 taken a thirteen-year-old girl as native wife or vahine (the Tahitian word for "woman"), a marriage contracted in the course of a single afternoon.
This was Teha'amana, called Tehura in the travelogue, who was pregnant by him by the end of summer 1892.
Teha'amana is the subject of several of Gauguin's paintings, including Merahi metua no Tehamana and the celebrated Spirit of the Dead Watching, as well as a notable woodcarving Tehura now in the Musée d'Orsay.
By the end of July 1893, Gauguin had decided to leave Tahiti and he would never see Teha'amana or her child again even after returning to the island several years later.
