When Napoleon realizes that significant Austrian forces are already over the Isar and are marching towards the Danube, he insists that the entire French army deploy behind the Ilm River in a bataillon carré within forty-eight hours, all in hopes of undoing Berthier's mistakes and achieving a successful concentration.

His orders are unrealistic because he underestimates the number of Austrian troops that are heading for Davout; Napoleon believes Charles only has a single corps over the Isar, but in fact, the Austrians have five corps lumbering towards Regensburg, a grand total of eighty thousand men.

Napoleon needs to do something quickly to save his left flank from collapsing.

Davout anticipates the problems and withdraws his corps from Regensburg, leaving a garrison of only two thousand for defense.

The northbound Austrian columns in the Kelheim–Abbach zone run into the four French columns heading west towards Neustadt in the early hours of the 19th.

Davout holds his ground, and although Napoleon sends reinforcements, about thirty-six thousand French troops have to face off against seventy-five thousand Austrians.

When Napoleon finally learns that Charles is not withdrawing to the east, he realigns the Grande Armée's axis in an operation that becomes known as the Landshut Maneuver.

All available French forces, except twenty thousand troops under Bessieres that are chasing Hiller, now hurl themselves against Eckmühl in another bid to trap the Austrians and relieve their beleaguered comrades.

Napoleon now launches Masséna to capture Straubing to the east while the rest of the army pursues the escaping Austrians.

Charles leaves forty thousand troops under Rosenburg and Hohenzollern to attack Davout and Lefebvre
on April 22, while detaching two corps under Kollowrat and Lichtenstein to march for Abbach and gain undisputed control of the river bank.

At 1:30 pm, however, the sound of gunfire from the south can be heard—Napoleon has arrived.

Davout immediately orders an attack along the entire line despite numerical inferiority; the 10th Light Infantry Regiment successfully storms the village of Leuchling and goes on to capture the woods of Unter-Leuchling with horrific casualties.

Napoleon's reinforcements are soon crippling the Austrian left.

The Battle of Eckmühl ends in a convincing French victory, and Charles decides to withdraw over the Danube towards Regensburg.

The French manage to capture Regensburg after a heroic charge led by Marshal Lannes, but the vast majority of the Austrian army flees successfully to Bohemia.
