George Wade
British Army officer
Years: 1673 - 1748
Field Marshal George Wade PC (1673 – March 14, 1748) is a British Army officer who serves in the Nine Years' War, War of the Spanish Succession, Jacobite rising of 1715 and War of the Quadruple Alliance before leading the construction of barracks, bridges and proper roads in Scotland.
He goes on to be a military commander during the War of the Austrian Succession and Commander-in-Chief of the Forces during the Jacobite rising of 1745.
He is perhaps best remembered today for his destruction of many miles of Hadrian's Wall to the west of Newcastle upon Tyne, flattening it and using its foundations as the core of his Military Road in Northumberland.
This is a response to the Jacobite rising of 1745.
