Jean-François
leader of the Haitian Revolution
Years: 1745 - 1805
Jean-François Papillon (died 1805), is an African-born slave that had worked in the plantation of Papillon in the last decades of the 18th Century, in the North Province of Saint-Domingue.
He escapes from that plantation and becomes a maroon, so when the Haitian revolution starts in August 1791 he has already enjoyed a direct experience of freedom.
