Manuel Deodoro da Fonseca (August 5, 1827 – August 23, 1892) is a Brazilian politician and military officer who serves as the first President of Brazil.
He takes office after heading a military coup that deposes Emperor Pedro II and proclaims the Republic in 1889, disestablishing the Empire, and steps down little more than two years later, in 1891, under great political pressure.
He is therefore the first Brazilian President to resign from office.
