leader of the Powhatan
Years: 1545 - 1618

Chief Powhatan (c. June 17, 1545 – c. 1618), whose proper name is Wahunsenacawh or (in 17th century English spelling) Wahunsunacock, is the leader of the Powhatan (also spelled Powatan and Powhaten), a powerful tribe of Virginia Indians, as well as an associated confederacy of numerous tribes speaking Algonquian languages, known as the Powhatan Paramount Chiefdom.
