The Battle of Hochkirch occurs on October 14, 1758, during the Seven Years' War.
After several weeks of jockeying for position, an Austrian army of eighty thousand commanded by Feldzeugmeister (Lieutenant Field Marshal) Leopold Josef Graf Daun surprises the Prussian army of thirty thoussand to thirty-six thousand, commanded by Frederick the Great; the Austrian army overwhelms he Prussians and forces a general retreat.
The battle takes place around the village of Hochkirch, which is nine kilometers (six miles) east of Bautzen, Saxony.
The battle ranks among Frederick's greatest blunders, although the failure of the Austrian commander to follow up on his victory nullifies the loss.
