The Battle of Jackson, fought on May 14, 1863, in Jackson, Mississippi, is part of the Vicksburg Campaign in the American Civil War.
Union commander Maj. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant and the Army of the Tennessee defeat elements of the Confederate Department of the West, commanded by General Joseph E. Johnston, seizing the city, cutting supply lines, and opening the path to the west and the Siege of Vicksburg.
