Seqiti War War (Free State-Basuto War, second phase)
1865 CE
to 1868 CE
The Free State-Basuto War again breaks out in 1865 and the Boers meet with considerable success.
After an unsuccessful appeal to aid from the British Empire, Moshoeshoe is forced to sue for peace in 1866 and the treaty of Thaba Bosiu is signed, with Basotho ceding large territories to the Free State.
However, the Basotho aren't satisfied with the terms of the treaty and conflict again arises in 1867.
During this third war, the Free State storms most of the Basotho strongholds, with Thaba Bosiu alone remaining impregnable.
When things look bleak, Moshoeshoe again appeals for aid from the British, and eventually accepts annexation from the British Empire on March 12, 1868.
Basutoland is placed under British protection, ending the conflict.
In the final treaty, Basotho has to again cede territories, but still retains enough land to remain a viable state.
