Western Schism or Papal Schism (also known as the Great Schism of Western Christianity)

The Catholic Church splits in 1378 in the so-called Western Schism or Papal Schism (also known as the Great Schism of Western Christianity).

By its end, three men simultaneously claim to be the true pope, their claims damaging the reputation of the office.

Driven by politics rather than any real theological disagreement, the schism is ended in 1417 by the Council of Constance (1414-1418)
