December 1212 CE
A disillusioned Pope Innocent III, shifting his support to the son of the late emperor Henry VI soon after Otto’s invasion of Sicily, has fomented rebellion in Germany.
He has persuaded young Frederick to resign his Sicilian kingdom (for the pope fears the loss of his own freedom should both kingdoms be held by the same man) and assert his hereditary rights in Germany.
Beatrix having died in the summer of 1212, Frederick had arrived in Germany with his army in September 1212, by which time most of the former Staufen supporters had deserted Otto for Frederick, electing him king for a second time; on December 9, 1212, he is crowned as Frederick II at Mainz.
He also assumes Philip’s title as Duke of Swabia, and Otto’s title as King of Italy.
