Mexico cedes virtually all of what becomes the Southwestern United States to the U.S in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo on February 2, 1848.

The unincorporated California Territory will become a provisional official possession; it will never be organized by the United States Congress as a territory, but will directly pass the requirements for statehood in 1850.
