A new court established by the Palestine…
December 1995 CE
A new court established by the Palestine Authority in Gaza sentences a member of the Islamic Jihad to fifteen years in prison for having trained youths to kill Israelis.
Arafat appears determined to crack down on those who challenge his authority or seek to undermine efforts to achieve peace in the Middle East.
Numerous arrests followed by secret trials and severe sentences appear to be Arafat's strategy to quell violence in his homeland.
However, despite Israeli protests, 'Arafat seeks to co-opt rather than repress Hamas.
Israel therefore continues its own antiterrorism war, and two Hamas leaders are assassinated in 1994 and 1995, one in Gaza itself.
