A Turkish force under Ottoman musir (field marshal) Osman Nuri Pasha repulses the Russians at newly fortified Pleven, located in the territory of modern Bulgaria, and stems their advance on July 20 in what is called the First Battle of Pleven.

Attempts to break Osman’s resistance fail.
