Abdülhamid, a pious and benevolent man with a keen interest in state affairs, favors reform and has appointed able grand viziers to whom he has entrusted wide powers.
He has initiated army reforms and opened the Imperial Naval Engineering School.
He also has endeavored to strengthen the central government against provincial rulers, particularly in Syria, Egypt, and Iraq.
His twenty-seven-year-old nephew, a son of Mustafa III (reigned 1757–74), succeeds him as Selim III at the sultan's death on April 7, 1789.
