Bulgaria begins its independence as a nation…
January 1879 CE
Bulgaria begins its independence as a nation of smallholders with one of the most egalitarian land distributions in Europe.
The liberation of Bulgaria from Turkish rule also functions as a land reform, for Russian occupation authorities (and subsequent Bulgarian governments) confiscate the Turkish estates and sell them in small parcels to the peasantry.
Not only do Muslims leave the new Bulgarian state after its creation in 1878, but Christian refugees arrive from Macedonia and Thrace.
