Alexander Parkes develops Parkesine—the first thermoplastic—a celluloid based on nitrocellulose with ethanol solvent, in 1856

A metallurgist and inventor from Birmingham, England, Parkes had in 1850 developed and patented the Parkes process for economically de-silvering lead, also patenting refinements to the process in 1851 and 1852.
