An alarmed Sher Ali attempts to rally the tribes to his support with little success.
Leaving his son, Yaqub Khan, as his regent in Kabul, Sher Ali seeks help from the Russians in Turkmenistan, asking to meet in person with the Russian Tsar, but unable to do so and advised by the Russians to make peace, he returns to Mazari Sharif, where he dies on February 21, 1879.
