The Pizza Margherita, whose red tomatoes, green basil, and white cheese represent the Italian flag, is invented by a Neapolitan baker named Raffaele Esposito on June 19, 1889, according to legend.

Named after Margherita of Savoy, the Queen consort of the Kingdom of Italy by marriage to Umberto I, this is the forerunner of the modern pizza.
