An Italian story in Ecatommiti (Hecatommithi), a collection of one hundred and twelve moralistic stories according to the pattern of Boccaccio's Decameron written in 1566 by Italian poet and dramatist Giovanni Battista Giraldi, surnamed Cynthius (Italian Cinzio, or Cinthio), concerns a domestic tragedy whose central figure is professional soldier Othello, the Moor of Venice.
