June 1833 CE
The Mexican government initiates drastic liberal reforms: Gómez Farías works hard to root out corruption, which angers many of the powerful among the military, wealthy landowners, and the Catholic Church.
Returning from his hacienda, Santa Anna renounces the government's policies and overthrows the presidency, forcing Gomez Farías and many of his supporters to flee Mexico for the United States.
Santa Anna declares that Mexico is not ready for democracy, becomes an openly Conservative centralist, and appoints himself dictator.
This is applauded by some conservatives, but meets with considerable disapproval from other sectors.
