Van Gogh, arriving in Paris in spring 1886 and still concerned with improving his drawing, meets Pauyl Gauguin, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, and others, who open his eyes to the latest developments in French painting.

At the same time, Vincent's brother Theo introduces him to Seurat, Pissarro and other artists of the waning Impressionist school.

One of van Gogh's first Paris canvases is his Self-Portrait with Dark Felt Hat at the Easel (1886; Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam (Vincent van Gogh Foundation)).
