December 1532 CE
Quizquiz is proceeding to the consolidation of power for Atahualpa in the region of Cuzco as the news comes of the tragedy of Cajamarca and the capture of his master.
Atahullpa now has Quizquiz stay with half of his warriors in Cusco, and Chalcuchimac with the other half in Jauja.
Quizquiz is in Cusco at the time of the Spaniards' arrival.
The inhabitants recognize the Spanish are not gods by their behavior.
Atahualpa, collecting the ransom, has persuaded Francisco Pizarro to send three soldiers in the capital to personally check on the collection of gold.
The three—Martín Bueno, Pedro Martin de Moguer and Pedro de Zárate—are treated honorably, despite their far from blameless behavior.
The rude soldiers venture to desecrate the temples and undermine the Virgins of the Sun, but the instructions from Atahualpa do not allow any appropriate measures to be taken against the three.
Atahualpa is told by Pizarro that he will bring Huáscar to Cajamarca and Pizarro will judge which brother is the better Sapa Inca.
In response, Atahualpa orders Huáscar killed, allegedly by drowning, so that he is not in a position to offer Pizarro a larger ransom of gold than Atahualpa is offering for his own release.
