Major General Judson Kilpatrick's Cavalry Division screens the left flank of Sherman's army as it advances into North Carolina,

Two of Kilpatrick's brigades had encamped near the Charles Monroe House in Cumberland (now Hoke) County on the evening of March 9.

Hampton's Confederate cavalry surprises the Federals in their camps early on March 10, , driving them back in confusion and capturing wagons and artillery.

The Federals regroup and counterattack, regaining their artillery and camps after a desperate fight.

With Union reinforcements on the way, the Confederates withdraw.
