Hugh Judson Kilpatrick (January 14, 1836 – December 4, 1881) is an officer in the Union Army during the American Civil War, achieving the rank of brevet major general.
He is later the United States Minister to Chile, and a failed political candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives.
Known as "Kilcavalry" (or "Kill-Cavalry") for using tactics in battle that are considered as a reckless disregard for lives of soldiers under his command, Kilpatrick is both praised for the victories he achieves, and despised by southerners whose homes and towns he devastates.
