March 1776 CE
Charleston becomes a focal point in the ensuing American Revolution as the relationship between the colonists and Britain deteriorates.
It is twice the target of British attacks.
The British strategy at every stage assumes a large base of Loyalist supporters who will rally to the King given some military support.
South Carolina President and Commander in Chief John Rutledge learns in late March 1776 that a large British naval force is moving toward Charleston.
To help defend the city, he orders the construction of Fort Sullivan, on Sullivan's Island in the harbor.
He then places Colonel William Moultrie in charge of the construction and makes him the fort's commanding officer.
