The victorious Romans, at the end of…
148 BCE
The victorious Romans, at the end of the initial phase of the war against Carthage, had given all of Numidia to Massinissa of the Massaesyli, whose territory extends from Mauretania to the boundary of the Carthaginian territory, and also southeast as far as Cyrenaica, so that Numidia entirely surrounds Carthage (Appian, Punica, 106) except towards the sea.
Masinissa dies in 149 or 148 BCE, having expanded Numidia’s borders at Carthaginian expense and developed a collection of diverse, seminomadic tribes into a flourishing nation of peasant farmers.
Aemilianus divides his kingdom among Masinissa’s three sons, of whom Micipsa is his principal successor.
