201 BCE
Attalus, the king of Pergamon, before setting out to campaign against Philip's navy in the Aegean Sea, had strengthened the city walls of his capital against assault.
By taking this and other precautions, he hopes to prevent Philip from a seizing a large amount of booty from his territory.
Philip, deciding to attack Pergamon, arrives at the city with his army, sees that the city is undermanned and vsends his skirmishers against it, but they are easily repelled.
Seeing that the city walls are too strong for an assault, Philip retreats after destroying a few temples, including the temple of Aphrodite and the sanctuary of Athena Nicephorus.
