January 1557 CE
Bari, nominally a duchy, has long been ruled by the Sforzas of Milan.
Bona Sforza, the widow of King Sigismund the Old of Poland, had returned to the city in 1556; a year after her arrival, she is poisoned by her trusted officer, Gian Lorenzo Pappacoda.
Pappacoda had acted on behalf of King Philip II of Spain, who wished to avoid repaying his sizable debts to the Polish queen.
She is buried in St. Nicholas's cathedral in Bari.
The city passes to the the kingdom of Naples and its history contracts to a local one, as malaria becomes endemic in the region.
