1866 CE
Otto von Bismarck instigates the Austro-Prussian War, also known as the Seven Week’s War, in June 1866, in which Prussia and her ally, Italy, defeat Austria and several small German states.
The Prussians’ rapid string of victories culminate in the Battle of Koeniggratz (Sadowa) on July 3.
Under the August 23 Treaty of Prague, twenty-one states north of the Main River join a German North Confederation led by Prussia, effectively incorporating most of Germany, barring the German lands of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, into the Prussian state, ending Austrian dominance of Germany.
Austria cedes Venetia to Italy by the Peace of Vienna on October 3.
