Land is spotted south of the fiftieth parallel south for the first time on January 1, 1739, by Jean-Baptiste Charles Bouvet de Lozier, commander of the French ships Aigle and Marie.
Bouvet, who is searching for a presumed large southern continent, spots the island named for him through the fog and names the cape he sees Cap de la Circoncision.
He is not able to land and does not circumnavigate his discovery, thus not clarifying if it is an island or part of a continent, but his inaccurate plotting of its position will force the failure of several expeditions to find the island again.

Mandan tradition states that the Hidatsa were a nomadic tribe until their encounter with the Mandan, who taught them to build stationary villages and cultivate agriculture.
The Hidatsa had continued to maintain amicable relations with the Mandan and constructed villages north of them on the Knife River.
Later the Pawnee and Arikara had moved from the Republican River north along the Missouri River.
