July 1848 CE
Charles Albert, after enjoying great successes against the Austrians through the beginning of June, remain inactive for more than a month, confused by political conflicts between the various Italian states and shifting foreign alliances.
This respite allows the Austrians to reorganize and mount a vigorous counteroffensive that the Piedmontese army is unable to withstand.
Defeated decisively at Custoza on July 24 at the hands of Radetzky, Charles Albert regroups the main part of his army to defend Milan.
