Charles Goodyear, the first American to vulcanize rubber, a process which he discovered in 1839, obtains a US patent for his vulcanization process on June 15, 1844, but British rubber manufacturer Thomas Hancock, who has studied Goodyear’s samples, has already received a British patent, and claims to have reinvented vulcanization.
